How This Hormone Affects Memory & Focus
Category: Stress
Have you ever noticed that when life gets stressful, your thinking feels different?
Maybe it’s harder to focus.
Maybe you forget small things more often. Or your mind just feels a little foggy. For a long time, scientists did not fully understand why this happens.
Researchers discovered something fascinating about the brain’s stress response…
With modern brain imaging tools, scientists were able to watch how stress hormones affect brain activity. They found that ongoing stress can change how the brain processes information, especially in areas responsible for focus and memory.
One of the most surprising discoveries involved a small part of the brain called the hippocampus. This area helps us learn and remember things.
Scientists found that when stress hormones stay high for long periods, it can affect how this memory center works. In some studies of people under long-term stress, the hippocampus was even shown to shrink slightly.
This helps explain why people under a lot of stress may feel more forgetful or mentally tired.

When the brain senses stress, the body releases a hormone called cortisol. Cortisol is part of the body’s natural survival system. It helps you stay alert and respond quickly to challenges. When the brain senses stress, the body releases a hormone called cortisol.
In short bursts, cortisol can be helpful. But many people today live with constant low-level stress from work, busy schedules, and information overload. When cortisol stays high for too long, it can begin to affect the brain systems responsible for clear thinking.
When cortisol stays high for too long:
- Brain fog – thinking feels slower than usual
- Trouble concentrating – it’s harder to stay focused
- Mental fatigue – the brain feels tired even after rest
- Forgetfulness – small details are easier to miss
What Scientists Have Learned About Supporting the Brain
As researchers studied stress and the brain, they began looking at nutrients and plant compounds that might help support the body during stressful seasons.
Some interesting discoveries include:
- L-theanine – a natural compound first studied in green tea. Researchers noticed it influenced brain wave activity linked to relaxed alertness.
- Ashwagandha – as researchers began studying this in laboratories, they discovered that compounds in the root—called withanolides, appear to interact with the body’s stress response system. Rather than acting like a stimulant or sedative, it appeared to help the body adapt to stress more efficiently.
- Tyrosine – an amino acid the body uses to make brain chemicals that support focus, motivation, and mental performance.
