A Better Approach to Losing Weight
Most of us are aware of our weight, and if you’re dieting I’m sure you’re doing it to reduce fat. Not only does it feel better to fit into your favorite clothes, excess fat is associated with a number of medical issues, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, cancer, back pain, arthritis and orthopedic problems.
Unfortunately, most diets are either unsafe or will put you on a never ending YOYO cycle.
A recent study on dieting reveals that almost all successful dieters regain all of the weight they lost within one year. The Federal Trade Commission has stated that weight-loss products are the number one category for consumer fraud. There are many unscrupulous companies that prey upon consumers with unproven and sometimes unsafe weight-loss products. They make ridiculous claims like “drop 20 pounds in 20 days without changing how you eat or getting off the couch.”
Thankfully there is clinical evidence behind a better approach found during a research study by Dr Westcott. Dr Wayne Westcott, Ph.D. is Director of Exercise Science at Quincy College near Boston, Massachusetts. In this short video, Dr Westcott discusses weight loss successes in his research.
Most diet programs can have 30 or 40% of the weight lost as muscle, which just reduces your metabolic rate so far that you can’t keep that weight off.
And this is the cause of the YOYO diet.
Dr Westcott’s research provides powerful data validating the need for 50% higher protein intake over recommended dietary allowance (RDA) amounts in order to preserve muscle when dieting.
In our recent wellness webcast, Dr Bruce Daggy, who was the Chief Science Officer for Shaklee and Nutrisystem, unpacks Dr. Westcott’s research and shows you how you can implement a simple, safe, and healthy weight program in your daily life. I’ll provide a link to that webcast in my next post!
