According to Greek mythology, Daedalus and his son Icarus were imprisoned by King Minos on the island of Crete. Daedalus set to work to make wings for himself and his son Icarus. Using bird feathers of various sizes, thread, and wax, he shaped them to resemble a bird’s wings. After Daedalus and Icarus had flown past Samos, Delos, and Lebynthos, Icarus disobeyed his father and began to soar upward and too close to the sun. The sun melted the wax that held the feathers together, they fell off, and Icarus plunged into the sea.

Motivated by this mythological account, scientists set about to replicate Daedalus’ intended flight from Crete using a human-powered aircraft. As reported in Science News, “… bicyclist-cum-pilot Kanellos Kanellopoulos pedaled an aircraft 74 miles across the Aegean Sea in April 1988, breaking the previous record for self-powered time aloft, the engineers who designed the craft garnered a hefty dose of praise.”

“Less publicized, however, was a stunning success story about the application of theoretical physiology to a practical task. Out of the limelight, a team of metabolic mechanics put in long hours figuring how to keep Kanellopoulos’ human-body engine perfectly fueled and tuned during the strenuous four-hour trip.”

At one point, the team contacted the most clinically researched wellness company in the world to ask for help in developing a nutritional solution that would help keep the pilot hydrated and energized for  the trip. The product(s) they developed enabled Kanellopoulos to complete the trip without plunging into the sea!

Using lessons learned from “The Daedalus Project,” the company has produced numerous all-natural products that are used by Olympic and every-day athletes today to fuel their bodies, and enhance their performance!
